Episode 1074: For sale - half-full glass, never drank

2023-06-14

Donald Trump has been indicted and Corey is getting over being sick so the world has never looked better to him. Stephen has water on his lap and feels very differently. Annalise moderates this Trump/AI/Notley press conference extravaganza.

Corey Hogan and Stephen Carter talk the consequences of Donald Trump's indictment, whether AI use in campaigns should be disclosed and Rachel Notley's press conference announcing a review of the Alberta NDP campaign effort. Is Notley signalling her impending departure? Are we FINALLY at the moment that Republicans begin turning on Trump? And how many legs on a dog is optimal? Zain Velji, as always, isn't here. But Annalise Klingbeil is, and she's got you covered.

Welcome to The Strategist episode 1074. I'm your host, Annalise Klingbeil, with you as always, Stephen Carter and Corey Hogan.
Carter 0:10
I made a little accident.
Corey 0:13
So let me tell the audience what happened seconds before I hit record.
Corey 0:18
I said I was about to hit record. Stephen had a cup in his hand. Cups make noise. They create bad audio sounds. I don't
Carter 0:25
don't care. I don't care about the audio. yeah cory
Annalise 0:27
cory cares normally i've
Corey 0:30
i've given up caring in the middle of the episode but i figure in like the first 10 seconds we should we should avoid that okay that's my theory so
Corey 0:37
so i say steven what are you doing taking
Carter 0:39
taking a drink and
Corey 0:39
and so he decides being you know bringing that older child energy yeah that he has yeah old
Corey 0:46
he just spills the water out of his mouth like a waterfall for the visual gag for me and annalee's for
Annalise 0:52
no one else just no one
Annalise 0:54
it was funny though but
Annalise 0:56
but no and now i mean now you can be all wet and cold it's
Corey 1:01
it's not comfortable it's wonderful all
Annalise 1:03
you you did this to yourself steven carter yeah
Corey 1:07
you're all about the site gag on this podcast i've always appreciated that for you on
Annalise 1:12
on the podcast people
Carter 1:12
people love them yeah
Annalise 1:14
yeah with video it would make a bit more sense you
Carter 1:16
you remember that time we used to do video and then we decided We did used to do video. It
Annalise 1:20
It was like Riverside. Did you guys do video or is this a joke?
Corey 1:23
You know, obviously, as a long-time listener. Yeah, when you used to spend all that time watching.
Annalise 1:28
watching. Yeah, you did do
Annalise 1:31
video at one point. We'd
Corey 1:32
We'd like to do it again at some point. Yeah.
Carter 1:36
There seems to be a big conflict right now on what T-shirt Corey's wearing and whether or not the T-shirt is appropriate for
Carter 1:44
for the actual recording. well
Corey 1:48
well i will say like i normally wore t-shirts still like whatever i was wearing at the time and i'm a i'm a change when he gets home from work kind of guy but
Corey 1:56
but i did always feel like i was underdressed when recording the podcast with the t-shirt on you know the few times i was still in a jacket i felt like this is probably what i should be wearing but steven visual
Corey 2:06
visual gags that you record on the podcast top
Carter 2:09
top of the line we
Corey 2:11
we hadn't even hit record like
Corey 2:13
like this doesn't even work in this scenario where we are doing video but
Annalise 2:15
but now you told everyone about it would you you know just rare strategists like merch every episode like i mean
Corey 2:21
mean that's what you
Carter 2:23
i tried to do
Annalise 2:24
do that sell more of those sell more of those shirts that have they're sold like three of them i
Carter 2:28
i did the pillow center.ca i did the pillow gag on uh on jesperson shorted
Carter 2:33
shorted out by microphone and had to disappear for the next 15 minutes of the show so that's true you gotta be careful with the uh the site gags you gotta be careful with
Corey 2:42
with the site gags you do have to be cool we've sold a lot more chay shirts it is it is literally our best seller at this point how many
Annalise 2:47
many chay shirts we're
Corey 2:48
we're past a dozen sold yeah wow
Corey 2:52
wow that's i just want you to know
Corey 2:54
just wait a dozen sounded like a bigger number in my head
Annalise 2:59
considering no one calls it chay but you 12 is actually a lot i'll give you that i think
Corey 3:05
yeah i think people do call it chay yeah
Annalise 3:07
yeah no one does you're
Corey 3:09
you're just out of the loop a bit bit
Annalise 3:11
no one does you're also you're
Corey 3:12
you're not from chay so you wouldn't you wouldn't understand our language no
Annalise 3:16
no one calls it chay but 12
Corey 3:18
people have a t
Corey 3:20
pretty sure chay's taking off you know what you're not
Carter 3:22
not gonna get you're not gonna get cut of the chay merch
Carter 3:25

Annalise 3:30

Annalise 3:38
conversation last time just glad i'm still here touching
Annalise 3:43
um okay are we talking or are you telling us what you did today steven carter i
Carter 3:47

Carter 3:49
i went out for a bicycle ride uh with jeremy farkas ironically uh so is he a good
Corey 3:55
bike rider is he good at bicycling he's
Carter 3:58
his uh biking skills were unexpected um
Carter 4:02
um they were really
Carter 4:04
really really something that i wasn't prepared for so so where did where
Carter 4:12
we went to uh west brag and did bragging rights in merlin um
Carter 4:17
so it was like my heart rate biking
Carter 4:19
biking yeah well he said he'd done it before anyways um my heart rate did not bust 150 which was really nice it was good for for me not to to be really putting stress on my heart at my age as you know cory very old
Carter 4:37
yeah it was fun okay
Corey 4:37
okay good story bud yeah it's
Carter 4:41
nice downhill on merlin and i followed behind jeremy because that's what a good host does right you don't leave the other guy behind you and i went behind him anyways
Carter 4:50
anyways i need to buy new brake pads so that's
Carter 4:54
that's apropos of nothing wow the
Annalise 4:58
jeremy is really good at running and hiking so it's okay you know what at
Carter 5:03
point i was well he didn't spend a lot of time on his bike so that
Carter 5:08
that was good okay
Annalise 5:11
shots fired here okay guys uh discord is gonna go nuts about this carter there's pictures there's
Carter 5:17

Annalise 5:30
i'm not on the discord a lot but i bring a lot of people to the discord so it's all good i
Carter 5:36
don't even know what that means
Annalise 5:39
just sit with it this is her way of saying she's not on
Annalise 5:41
top of the channel in
Corey 5:43
in the discord okay guys
Annalise 5:44
guys first segment i am super uncomfortable right now
Carter 5:49
by the way from the water is
Corey 5:52
are we really having the is stephen carter toast segment
Annalise 5:54
segment with stephen carter here
Annalise 5:57
big day guys former president donald trump made his first appearance in a florida courtroom this afternoon he
Annalise 6:04
he pled not guilty to federal criminal charges that he illegally retained defense secrets and Obstructed Justice.
Corey 6:10
I don't even know where to start with this one.
Annalise 6:12
Where do you guys want to start? Have you read the indictment? What stands out? Corey, take it away.
Corey 6:19
So I've read the indictment. I actually just got around to it this morning or this afternoon. I just seen kind of the news coverage before then. It's pretty damning. Not only does it create a pretty compelling case that he put, that he was incredibly careless with national security secrets and and the way it sort of lists them near the end yeah and like these are the classifications and this is the general contents you know american military secrets nuclear secrets more military secrets foreign intelligence secrets really really damning but the other part is it makes a very very strong case that there was criminal intent here the cover-up is well articulated in it and it's one of these classic situations where you
Corey 7:00
know the cover-up in many ways, almost seems worse than the crime, because there's a universe where he didn't do any of these concealing things, like getting his personal aid to move the boxes around and hide the boxes from his own lawyer and hide the boxes from the FBI and from the grand jury. And he just looks like an idiot who brought boxes without sort of understanding the consequences of that. But when you sort of follow the trail that has been laid out so clearly in this indictment, You know, it
Corey 7:28
it just looks very bad for him. It shows the intent, it shows the action. And I guess this is one of the things that I think maybe we can unpack a bit as we go here, but that we're in a weird moment where Republicans are all hanging with this guy still. still.
Corey 7:43
But one of these things that I firmly believe, and we can argue about it, but there is a lot of evidence of this, is that reality wins in the long term. You can call this sort of a more localized version of the universe arcs toward justice. Don't know if that's true, but I do know reality wins in the long term. And I think if people get exposed more to these facts, like the general public, I mean, it's going to be harder and harder to stay with Donald Trump. And there's is a trial coming where this evidence is going to be laid out in long form and i don't i don't know i mean it seems like a very risky strategy for people to be standing this close to that guy accused with what he's been accused carter
Annalise 8:20
carter jump in do you agree with
Carter 8:22
well as as you know cory's the legal expert on the podcast and i am uh the political expert and what
Carter 8:29
what i think is interesting in in like this is this is the first time you've seen a president of the united states face charges, right? And it's not happening in Canada either. Like, this is unique to our kind of North American media experience, but it's not unique in
Carter 8:43
in the world. And there's patterns that develop in the world. And the first is that when a relatively popular president, popular at least with their own clique, if you will, their own side, is charged, or prime minister or minister or prominent politician, the first charged people tend to rally, right? They tend to rally around Maybe the second charge they'll rally around. But at some point, there is a tipping point where they no longer rally around. And I think
Carter 9:10
think that Trump's not there yet, obviously. But there are still the charges to come in Georgia. There's still more charges probably to come in New York. There's other places where charges could be laid. And at some point, if world history serves as a guidepost, then at some point in the future, Trump will be seen as pigpen. And as a result, he will be dropped
Carter 9:38
dropped by his people. And I think that's what's happening right
Carter 9:42
right now with his support. He's got tremendous support. And it's
Carter 9:49
it's really hurting those people who are running against him in the Republican nomination. But I think that they're all just waiting for all
Carter 9:57
all of these indictments to come in the next coming months and year
